Otis was found along the side of a road in Crosby, Texas... dragging his back legs behind him, very emaciated, and just worn out. A kind lady picked him up and took him to the vet, knowing that something was seriously wrong. X-rays revealed what appeared to be some kind of fragments in his spine and a fractured pelvis and leg. He was swimming in fleas and needed help!! We got Otis into our veterinary specialists who immediately referred us to a neurologist since he had no sensation or movement in his back half. What we learned next shocked us all... Click to read more!!
Hello new friends, my name is Luna and let me tell you a little bit about myself...
I found myself turned into the city pound by my owners who called me Momma Dog. I was Momma Dog because I had many, many litters for them and that's all they knew me as. My teets were still heavy from the last litter. I sat at the shelter and wondered how I landed there while my babies were probably being sold for cash. Click to read more.... it's worth the read!!
June was found as a stray and turned in to us along with her 5 puppies. We had an arrangement for June and all pups to transport up to Michigan where there were rescues waiting to take them in where there is a much higher demand for adopting dogs than there is a supply (opposite of Houston!) One June's milk in her teets dried up, we noticed a lump. The xrays revealed a hernia dangerously close to her lungs and so surgery to remove would be risky and require a specialists. We got her into Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists for the procedure and found out that she also had a hernia on her side that was also removed. She did excellent through the procedure and is recovering extremely well! She will be on crate rest for a few weeks to recover, but this perfectly sweet girl will be available for adoption soon! She's crate and house trained, does well with other humans and dogs!!
Joey and Chandler (think FRIENDS!) are a senior bonded pair. They were surrendered to the shelter as brothers. When we say how pathetic they looked online, we just couldn't let them stay there 1 more day-- so as an approved rescue, AJL was able to pull them. After some TLC from a wonderful foster family, they are doing much better and ready for adoption!
Joey is approximately 10 years old, and a white yorkie mix weighing in at 8lbs! Joey doesn't have full sight, he can see shadows & light, but that doesn't stop him! He is very loving, even though he has been through so much and has been a little trooper every step of the way. He loves to be held, and just craves human attention.
Chandler is a teacup or mini poodle, weighs around 7lbs, and we believe he's about 7-8 years old. In spite of the fact that he is blind and has had to overcome many obstacles, he just wants to be held and loved. In fact, he'd let you hold him all day long if he had his way. Chandler is house trained. We would prefer he be adopted with Joey, as they are a very bonded pair.
"I'll be there for you.... cause you're there for me too...."
Jack is a 1 year old Basenji mix. He is a very loving dog that gets along with every human and animal. He loves to run and play, but is calm and contemplative sitting next to an owner reading. This breed does not bark, but Jack can rarely make his voice heard in other ways! He is looking for an furever home to give him the love and attention he deserves!
Look at this dapper gentleman! Baxter is a 2 year old, 40 lb schnauzer mix. He is potty trained and very well behaved (doesn't even jump on the furniture)! He is still a bit timid but trusting of humans. He is good with other dogs, but prefers to just hang out by himself. Baxter is looking for a calm forever home as he is very low key. He is heartworm positive but AJL will cover all expenses related to treatment until he tests negative!
Penn was found in pretty rough shape by the Houston ship channel all alone. He was very emaciated and had mange. A wonderful foster is giving him the TLC he so badly needed. Penn is young, approximately 10 months old and only 13lbs. Our best guess on his breed is a dachshund/ terrier mix. He's gaining weight and the mange is starting to clear up. Penn is so full of love and is such a happy little boy. He's very interested in being around other dogs, but when they won't play, he's happy to just grab a toy or a bully stick and start the fun by himself! Penn is house and created trained and does well on a leash.
Penn will also be having surgery to repair one of his knees through a procedure called a femoral head ostectomy (FHO). Basically, his knee cap moves around which can cause some discomfort when running and walking. The surgery will be done by a highly skilled specialist so we expect a full recovery! Penn will be ready for adoption shortly.
Lacey is a 2 year old miniature poodle mix. She came to us in pretty rough condition. First priority was getting her to the vet and its a good thing we did-- her blood work revealed a dangerously low white blood count which meant she was at risk of going into sepsis (shock). We transferred her to the ER vet and started her on fluids to help her poor body recover. Luckily, she bounced back pretty quickly and is doing great now! It's amazing what a little TLC can do! Lacey will be spayed soon and is doing great in her foster home... she gets along great with other dogs of all sizes and is just fine with cats. She loves toys (and shoes!), to run, play and snuggle. Consider this sweet little girl if you're looking for a wonderful companion!
Hi, I'm Tripp! I'm a 4 year old terrier chi mix with a wirey coat. I am house trained and also don't mind the kennel. I am a very sweet boy, but I am still learning how to trust people. I follow my foster parents around the house wagging my tail, but I'm not too sure about being picked up and snuggled yet. I adore my foster dog siblings and I am picking up cues on how to behave from them! I am a really easy calm dog, and I don't mind children around me. I enjoy car rides and walks on the neighborhood. I am HW+, but next month I will start treatment to get rid of these nasty heartworms. I am so ready to meet you and to find my forever family!
Miss Freya Froglegs (she gets the name because of how she lays like a frog!) is looking to be the only pet in a home (but not an apartment) with room to run and a human to cuddle and be active with in a lifestyle that involves training and consistency. Freya has two great loves: snuggling with a person she trusts and using her energy to run/play/figure things out.
She was abandoned in a public park while suffering from a nasty infection by some not-so-nice people that appear to have been using her to breed. Though we have seen her immediately connect with many people in the time that she has been with her current family, some new people give her pause or take some time for her to relax around. (Though she does seem to have a soft spot for guys with beards). Freya has worked extensively with the Texas Dogfather to help her and show her what a safe and stable and loving home can be. She is now ready and available for adoption!
She's a smart girl who learns quickly, but gets excited and distracted. This means that she definitely knows commands like "sit", but she thinks she can outsmart you by squatting partway while she gets ready for the word "go" like she's at the races! Someone with previous dog training experience could certainly help her with this! Though she does well with some dogs, she is assertive in her desire to lead and has clashed with other assertive dogs in the past, so we recommend a single-pet home. Her ideal situation would be with one or more adults in a home with a fenced yard in a moderately quiet neighborhood.
She is crate and house trained and current on all vaccinations, spayed, and chipped. Meet & Greets will be conducted at the Texas Dogfather ranch in Katy, TX.
Sir Tidbit Wellington got his name because he was found all be his lonesome here in Houston on Tidwell. We aren't quite sure what breed he is yet, but he sure is cute! Poor guy was diagnosed with parvo less than 24 hrs after being found-- luckily his rescuer knew what the symptoms were and we got him vet care immediately. He received fluids and bounced back rather quickly, which is lucky and rare in parvo cases, but we are so thankful! He is now in a foster home getting strong and healthy. He will be ready for adoption in 1 more week!
Thea is a beautiful, gentle, and snuggly pittie mix with a pout that is hard to resist. She does great with small and large dogs, cats, and children-- she has lived with them all!
Thea was found on a nearby church property. When she was initially spotted, she was very pregnant. When someone came back to check on her, it was clear she had given birth, but it didn't seem like any of the puppies made it. She was covered in scabs and her skin was crawling with fleas. Without a place for her to go, eventually she was picked up by the city and taken to the shelter. With Houston shelter's so overcrowded, she quickly hit the "Euthanize" list. Luckily, a hero stepped up to foster her and let her know what love and care is all about!
Thea is heartworm positive and was recently diagnosed with cancer. She is undergoing chemo treatment and the Vet says there is a 95% success rate. Sweet Thea has been such a champ through all of this and everyone at the vets office comments on how sweet, calm and gentle she is. So, never judge a book by its cover because you may just miss an amazing story! She may look a little grumpy and serious in her photos, but she is full of soooo much love, just waiting to give it to whoever her forever family could be! Please consider giving this loving soul a chance!
Princesses story: An older lady got Princess when she was a puppy about 8 years ago. She has always been an outside dog and has never seen a vet. In 2010, the woman had a stroke and there have been a string of caretakers staying at the house. They fed and watered Princess and that was about it. The would had to go into the hospital and the current caregivers moved out with no notice to the woman's daughter. Long story short, Princess was low priority on the list of things the family is dealing with.
Luckily, we have wonderful volunteers who are going over to the house to feed and check up on Princess, but we would love for her to find her own home to live out her days in. Her health is slowly getting better-- poor girl had a bone (from something she chewed on) lodged in the roof of her mouth that had been there for who knows how long that we had surgically removed, her fur coat is looking better and better, and she generally seems happier to know that people care about her.
Because Princess never received much socialization, we are looking for a special home with no other pets. She's very laid back and easy going. Please consider giving this girl a chance.
Peppy is the most awesome pup ever. He weights approx 33 lbs and is so much fun to be around. If he had to have a person or comic name it would be Dennis the Menace. He plays well with his foster siblings, and does well with the cat. He loves to lay next to you or on you when you are in the chair, couch or bed. Peppy can be a bit noisy when playing but its all in fun, he's just a vocal little guy! Peppy knows how to sit, lay, shake, and speak! He does well on a leash and knows "come" (for the most part). He's up to date on vaccinations and will be neutered soon. Peppy just has this personality that you just can't help but LOVE. A little goofy but smart as a whip...little loud but loves to snuggle. Oh, and he has this overbite that makes him perfectly who he is! He's looking for his forever home and he deserves it!
Hey Everybody! My name is Branch and I'm a 40 lb lab mix ball of goofiness and love. I'm still super clumsy and sometimes I get tripped up on my own feet. I have kisses that last for days, I have those sweet puppy dog eyes and a tail that wags no matter what. I love running and being outside and playing in pools of water. I'll even join you for a cool shower! Even though I love playing, I am the world's best snuggler. I play well with other dogs and kids are a hoot too. I'm also really smart! I can shake, sit and lay down. I'm working on staying but it's so hard when everything is just so much fun!
Hello, my name is Pollo. Silly name but I'm actually a handsome 1-2 year old, 50 lb Terrier/American Pit Bull mix. I was roaming the streets all alone at night in January. Fortunately, I found a foster family that is taking great care of me. In the few short weeks I've been with my foster family, I've learned commands like: sit, stay, laydown, and kennel and I'm fully house trained. I love to cuddle, but I'm also full of energy and athletic. I get nervous on introductions because they are kinda new to me but I warm up after "breaking the ice".
I'm up to date on vaccinations and will be getting neutered soon, whatever that means....
I'm looking for a family that will help me grow-up to my potential and love me very much!
Ladies & Gents, welcome Johnny Cash to the crew! He's a handsome shepherd/lab mix who was dumped at our local vet office. Johnny was left with his sister, June Carter and they were both battling parvo.
The vet staff took special care of Johnny & June and helped them overcome the nasty parvo virus! Johnny is a playful pup and would love to have his very own family. He is estimated to be 1 year and 8 months old, he is up to date on all vetting and is neutered. Johnny would make a great jogging, frisbee, dog park, or dog bar buddy! Johnny and June can be adopted together or go to individual homes, the choice is yours!
Howdy! My name is June Carter and I'm ready to meet you and be best friends forever!I am a shepherd mix, about 1 year and 8 months old, up to date on all my vetting, and spayed. My brother Johnny and I were left at our local vet clinic doorsteps. We were very sick with parvo. The vet staff took great care of us and helped us survive and thrive!
While I would love to find a home with my brother, we can be split up too-- whatever will get us into our very own homes! I also love other dogs, so how about we set up a doggy play date?!
Lady is a dainty 35lb, 3 year old lab mix who has come a long way from being tethered in a backyard her whole life. She started out a little unsure of all of these new experiences, but she now embraces them and loves her new freedom! She does well around dogs small & big, but no cats please. She's very loving around people, the highlight of her day is when you come home & she can give you lots of hugs. Lady is also house trained & also does fine in a crate, but isn't currently crated during the day while her foster is at work because she pretty much sleeps all day and does very well on her own. She's a great combo of being laid back when she needs to be, but also loves to play! Lady is currently heartworm positive and undergoing treatment - AJL will continue to cover treatment until she tests negative.
If you're interested in adopting our sweet Lady, please fill out the adoption application on the Animal Justice League website: https://animaljusticeleague.org/expectations/
Update: Callie successfully completed (with flying colors!) a full immersion training program with the Texas Dogfather. Callie needed to learn some basic 'pack manners'. She has progressed so well that Callie now attends the dog parks regularly with her foster dad (with supervision, of course)! Callie is now in a foster home looking for her forever family who can continue to give her guidance and structure!
Callie is a very happy & healthy 1.5 year old, 45 pound, terrier mix. She is a little shy at first, but warms up very quickly becoming your loyal companion and shadow. She gets along well with other dogs that are her size and loves to play (no small dogs, please!). Her favorite thing to do is to run around the backyard-- she would do great with an active owner! Callie loves her squeaky toys and can entertain herself easily, but she'd really love to entertain you!
Stella was found bloody and immobile on the side of the road, she was another victim of being hit by a car. Two of our volunteers came to her rescue and rushed her to our vet for examination. Xrays revealed she had a nasty break in her leg and needed to see an ER vet to ensure no additional internal trauma. She went to VERGI for further care and then was instructed to have immediate surgery on her leg which would require a specialist (specialist = expensive!). But, we got her to a specialist to perform the surgery to repair her leg before amputation was required. Stella was doing well post-surgery, but still wasn't putting much weight on her front leg so she had to undergo ANOTHER surgery, but is recovering and doing great now! Stella is a sweet sweet girl and is very appreciative to be in a caring fostering home and not suffering on the streets any longer, but she would really love a home of her own!
Meet Clark W. Griswold…better known just as, Clark! He was found wandering the streets of Independence Heights in Houston around Christmas time. If he was meeting you in person right now, he would give you a big, doggy hug!
Clark is a 53-pound bundle of snuggles who loves to play with toys. The vets think he is a one-and-a-half year-old Shar Pei-Pit Bull mix…Shar Pei because of his giant, wrinkly head.
Clark has a calm demeanor and does well with dogs of both larger and smaller sizes, but unknown of cats right now, as he hasn’t been exposed. He knows general commands, is crate trained, housebroken, good with kids, and heartworm negative. He has some battle scars from his life on the streets, but that hasn’t taken away from his sweet nature or willingness to trust.
Clark enjoys long walks, sunbathing in the backyard, watching his foster mom cook in the kitchen, going for car rides, taking naps, and chewing on bones from the feed store. His dislikes are being in a crate (even though he is trained), sharing food, and green beans.
Who is ready to welcome this handsome man into their family?
Loretta was found as a stray wandering around. We believe she is a Cattle dog/ Catahoula mix. She is around 2 1/2 to 3 years old, weighs 35 lbs, has been spayed, and is current on vaccinations. She is pretty shy and quiet and a bit submissive. Loretta is what we refer to as "dog selective"-- this means she gets a long great with non-assertive dogs but does not like with other dogs assert dominance over her as it scares her and causes her to react. Just like humans prefer some people over others, Loretta is no different! She does well with kids but needs a home without a kitty to chase around. Loretta is heartworm positive and is being treated for this but don't let that deter you from adopting this sweet girl-- Animal Justice League will continue to pay for all treatments! She has been going through training with the Canine Counselor and will soon be starting class through Peace Love Dogs to become a Courteous Canine which is a highly coveted honor!
Indie is a border collie/chow mix, approx. 3 years old, who was found wandering the streets with her litter of puppies. She wasn't immediately rescued because we couldn't find all of the puppies and didn't want to leave them stranded, but once we knew they were safe, we went for it. She was one of the most scared dogs we've ever rescued from the streets. We aren't sure how long she was alone, but long enough to become distrustful of humans. Thankfully she still trusted her other 4 legged friends who helped us rescue her and have been her support system in her foster home. Since June, she's come such a long way... she still has a way to go to completely trust, but as our trainer said "she wants so badly to be a part of a family." She is one of the sweetest dog we've ever met, she loves being around other dogs and people she trusts, and we've yet to hear her bark. There's been no reason to crate her as she was house/potty trained from day 1 (which is quite amazing given her circumstances), and has never chewed on or destroyed anything. She's not sure yet how to play with toys or other dogs as she never had these luxuries before. But she loves to run with her foster siblings in the backyard and watch and observe their play. Based on the progress she's made in such a short amount of time, with someone who has kindness, patience, and a big heart, we can only imagine how amazing she will be! She is spayed, microchipped, fully vaccinated and heart worm positive. As always, AJL will continue to pay for her heart worm treatment after adoption, until the vet gives us a negative!
Indie will do best in a home with other dogs, as they have proven to be her safety factor for gaining trust and just overall comfort. She has not been tested with cats since the current foster home does not have any.
