Deke is a 5 month old black and tan hound mix. He was found in the 5th ward of Houston on Sept 19 just walking down the street, tongue hanging out, super hot and the poor thing had one of his legs stuck through his collar (who knows how this happened) so he was obviously having a very difficult time walking. The finder called him and he wiggled his cute little butt on over!
He has big paws which means he'll be a big boy. He's been known to trip over his long lengthy legs. He loves other dogs and would do best in a home with other dogs to help boost his confidence -- he's a follower, not a leader and loves being a part of a family.
In Arabic, Aamina means "safe" and that's exactly what this girl is now.
She was found on the side of a very busy road. Luckily one of our amazing volunteers saw her and was able to get her to safety. We think she is 2-3 years old and some sort of terrier mix because she has a long body with short legs. She is very timid but is very sweet. She's slowly starting to come out of her shell. She'll need someone who can give her lots of love and patience.
This is Monkey. He's a tiny and fun Yorkie mix with lots of love to give! He loves everyone-- big dogs, small dogs, small kid humans and big tall humans, and even kitty friends!
He's young with lots of energy to burn so he is ready to play play play!!
Sparkle is a 2 year old chi-weenie. This gal is looking for a new home after her previous owners home flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Shes got big ears and a big heart! She is already spayed and current on vaccinations. Sparkle plays well with little kids and other dogs (even big ones!). She's housebroken and crate trained.
Hi! I'm Chase! No one really knows what breed I am for sure, but they just keep saying how cute I am!
Chase is approx 5 months old and maybe a heeler/pointer/boxer mix. He weighs 28 lbs and is neutered and healthy as can be. He is a typical puppy, fully of energy and just wants to play all day. He's mostly potty trained and knows to play with his toys-- allll of them! He loves to be outside and play with other dogs in the home. He does well in a crate during the day and sleeps in his bed at night.
Chase was turned into Harris Co animal shelter after Hurricane Harvey and quickly his time ran out as the shelters are just too full. A foster sprung him from the shelter but couldn't keep him long. So, he is now in AJL and enjoying life!!
Ben (aka Benny Boy) is a little chi guy that was found at the intersection in SW Houston. He's doing great in a foster home with 3 big dogs and adjusting well.
Ben is heartworm positive, but AJL will cover all expenses related to treatment so please don't let this deter you from making this little guy a part of your home!
Goldie - or Munchkin as she's lovingly called - is a 5 month old Basenji/Cattle dog mix puppy. We actually have no idea what breed she is, but it's the closest explanation for the curly tail! Ha! She was found abandoned with her 3 siblings living under a house at 5 weeks old. But she's a fighter through & through!
You see, her siblings all left for homes in PA but she had to stay behind. Goldie has a condition called Congenital Lymphedema, predominantly in one of her hind legs. It's very rare, the Specialist who saw her said he's been practicing for 24 years and has only seen 2-3 cases. After several consults, the vet feels confident that she's currently a happy, healthy, playful puppy and we life expectancy is 2-3 years.
We'd love for her to find a home where she can find that love & compassion for the 2-3 years she's got. She lives in a foster home today with other dogs and holds her own! She sleeps in her crate through the night and is house trained. If you think you're the person or family for Goldie, please let us know! We can also discuss more regarding Congenital Lymphedema and AJL's commitment to help with medical bills.
HoneyBear had been living on the streets for a long time so she was weary of humans and a bit skittish. A skilled trapper was able to trap her and get her into a foster home where she is starting to come out of her shell. She is a chi-weenie mix, we guess maybe 6-8 years old. She has probably been a mom to a few litters in her days (those days are numbered now!) She was a bit reserved at first but is warming up to humans and other dogs and cats. She is in a home with other big dogs and some rambunctious puppies and is even starting to play with them, though she'll let them know when she is no longer interested. She is potty trained and does okay on leash walks. She's very sweet and loves belly rubs but isn't quite sure about being a lap dog just yet -- but she wants to be near you! HoneyBear needs a home that will be patient with her as she continues to come out of her shell and give her some basic training.
Looking for a perfectly chill, well mannered dog? Canelo is your man! He was pulled from Houston Pets Alive as an owner surrender after the Hurricane Harvey floods. This sweet boy is a yellow lab mix, around 2 years old, neutered and microchipped. The staff at HPA said he was calm and comfortable even in the shelter environment, and was completely NON reactive to dogs or human sounds! He was loved and this is what else they had to say:
"Canelo is not only a handsome dog but he is also well behaved! He tries to wait to be taken outside to use the restroom and will maintain his kennel nice and clean. He is affection and you will get lots of butt wiggles from this guy. He can't wait to become a part of your family!"
Mikey is a stunning shepherd-mix puppy born in early June 2017. He was transferred to Houston from a shelter in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. The vets determined he was struck by a car shortly before he was found, as he had multiple leg fractures. Animal Justice League knew Mikey would make a great pet for someone, so we rescued him and arranged for his leg surgery.
About the shepherd-mix: We can’t know for certain what breed Mikey is. However, all the vets agree he probably has some German shepherd in him and maybe some Blue Heeler or Husky. We don’t care: These are all great breeds, and he is one sweet, handsome puppy!
This little pup is playful, affectionate and intelligent. He is crate trained and working on housebreaking. Mikey is surprisingly calm for a puppy. He does well around people and other dogs and seems to adjust quickly to any new situation. A bonus: His fur is soft like a bunny’s.
Mikey won’t be available for adoption for a few more weeks while he continues to recover. The doctor says he will probably have a limp, but he already is getting around just fine and is using the leg that was operated on. This little boy is a trooper!
Say hello to Tide! Tide is an adorable 12 week old puppy who needs a loving family. He was left in a cardboard box outside a washateria during Harvey. He is a playful, lovable little guy that would be a great companion or playmate. He is a quick learner and understand how to sit. We are working on potty training and he is almost there! Please consider this little guy!
!!Precious alert!! We have a new little one in Animal Justice League!! He was a transfer into Houston Pets Alive from a high kill shelter in the valley of Texas. His name is Casper, he's a chihuahua mix, approximately 2 months old, and weighs 4 lbs. And he is soooooo cute!!
Ginger is another one of our Harvey survivors. She was picked up as a stray in Hidalgo. She is estimated as 1-2 year old chi-weenie. She's a very gentle, sweet girl and LOVES to snuggle and be held. She is great with other dogs and kids, but not yet cat tested. She's super quiet, haven't heard her bark yet! She enjoys quite time in her crate, but her favorite thing is to be around people.
Hank is one of 4 dogs we pulled from Houston Pets Alive following Hurricane Harvey. He's a male beagle that was brought in as a stray. We don't know his life story, but we know it wasn't kind to him... he is middle-aged and has scars/sores on his neck from a chain or tight collar, he also has very advanced heartworms. Past all that, Hank is incredibly loving and sweet and has quite a bit of energy for an old man. He loves other dogs, cats, and especially kids! He is a joyful guy, wagging his tail even when he isn't always feeling so great. He loves to be in the middle of the foster family chaos and even has a bit of FOMO (Fear of missing out). AJL will cover all expenses related to his heartworm treatment. Fill out an application if you are interested in giving this boy some TLC and a good home.
Lambchops is a 4 year old, female, miniature poodle mix. If you are looking for the perfect lap dog and snuggly buddy, look no further than Lampchop! This sweetie was found wandering the streets, looking sad and matted, but she is all smiles now that she has a clean, comfy house to relax in and a human to cuddle with. Lamb Chop's favorite activity? Hanging out with you! She loves nothing more than to curl up in your lap and be petted. Did we mention that she's a poodle mix? Hypoallergenic and little to no shedding!
Otis was found along the side of a road in Crosby, Texas... dragging his back legs behind him, very emaciated, and just worn out. A kind lady picked him up and took him to the vet, knowing that something was seriously wrong. X-rays revealed what appeared to be some kind of fragments in his spine and a fractured pelvis and leg. He was swimming in fleas and needed help!! We got Otis into our veterinary specialists who immediately referred us to a neurologist since he had no sensation or movement in his back half. What we learned next shocked us all... Click to read more!!
Hello new friends, my name is Luna and let me tell you a little bit about myself...
I found myself turned into the city pound by my owners who called me Momma Dog. I was Momma Dog because I had many, many litters for them and that's all they knew me as. My teets were still heavy from the last litter. I sat at the shelter and wondered how I landed there while my babies were probably being sold for cash. Click to read more.... it's worth the read!!
Joey and Chandler (think FRIENDS!) are a senior bonded pair. They were surrendered to the shelter as brothers. When we saw how pathetic they looked online, we just couldn't let them stay there 1 more day-- so as an approved rescue, AJL was able to pull them. After some TLC from a wonderful foster family, they are doing much better and ready for adoption!
Joey is approximately 10 years old, and a white yorkie mix weighing in at 8lbs! Joey doesn't have full sight, he can see shadows & light, but that doesn't stop him! He is very loving, even though he has been through so much and has been a little trooper every step of the way. He loves to be held, and just craves human attention.
Chandler is a teacup or mini poodle, weighs around 7lbs, and we believe he's about 7-8 years old. In spite of the fact that he is blind and has had to overcome many obstacles, he just wants to be held and loved. In fact, he'd let you hold him all day long if he had his way. Chandler is house trained. We would prefer he be adopted with Joey, as they are a very bonded pair.
"I'll be there for you.... cause you're there for me too...."
Update: THEA BEAT CANCER AND HEARTWORMS!!!
Thea is a beautiful, gentle, and snuggly pittie mix with a pout that is hard to resist. She does great with small and large dogs, cats, and children-- she has lived with them all!
Thea was found on a nearby church property. When she was initially spotted, she was very pregnant. When someone came back to check on her, it was clear she had given birth, but it didn't seem like any of the puppies made it. She was covered in scabs and her skin was crawling with fleas. Without a place for her to go, eventually she was picked up by the city and taken to the shelter. With Houston shelter's so overcrowded, she quickly hit the "Euthanize" list. Luckily, a hero stepped up to foster her and let her know what love and care is all about!
Thea is heartworm positive and was recently diagnosed with cancer. She is undergoing chemo treatment and the Vet says there is a 95% success rate. Sweet Thea has been such a champ through all of this and everyone at the vets office comments on how sweet, calm and gentle she is. So, never judge a book by its cover because you may just miss an amazing story! She may look a little grumpy and serious in her photos, but she is full of soooo much love, just waiting to give it to whoever her forever family could be! Please consider giving this loving soul a chance!
Princesses story: An older lady got Princess when she was a puppy about 8 years ago. She has always been an outside dog and has never seen a vet. In 2010, the woman had a stroke and there have been a string of caretakers staying at the house. They fed and watered Princess and that was about it. The would had to go into the hospital and the current caregivers moved out with no notice to the woman's daughter. Long story short, Princess was low priority on the list of things the family is dealing with.
Luckily, we have wonderful volunteers who are going over to the house to feed and check up on Princess, but we would love for her to find her own home to live out her days in. Her health is slowly getting better-- poor girl had a bone (from something she chewed on) lodged in the roof of her mouth that had been there for who knows how long that we had surgically removed, her fur coat is looking better and better, and she generally seems happier to know that people care about her.
Because Princess never received much socialization, we are looking for a special home with no other pets. She's very laid back and easy going. Please consider giving this girl a chance.
Hello, my name is Pollo. Silly name but I'm actually a handsome 1-2 year old, 50 lb Terrier/American Pit Bull mix. I was roaming the streets all alone at night in January. Fortunately, I found a foster family that is taking great care of me. In the few short weeks I've been with my foster family, I've learned commands like: sit, stay, laydown, and kennel and I'm fully house trained. I love to cuddle, but I'm also full of energy and athletic. I get nervous on introductions because they are kinda new to me but I warm up after "breaking the ice".
I'm up to date on vaccinations and will be getting neutered soon, whatever that means....
I'm looking for a family that will help me grow-up to my potential and love me very much!
Ladies & Gents, welcome Johnny Cash to the crew! He's a handsome shepherd/lab mix who was dumped at our local vet office. Johnny was left with his sister, June Carter and they were both battling parvo.
The vet staff took special care of Johnny & June and helped them overcome the nasty parvo virus! Johnny is a playful pup and would love to have his very own family. He is estimated to be 1 year and 8 months old, he is up to date on all vetting and is neutered. Johnny would make a great jogging, frisbee, dog park, or dog bar buddy! Johnny and June can be adopted together or go to individual homes, the choice is yours!
Meet Clark W. Griswold…better known just as, Clark! He was found wandering the streets of Independence Heights in Houston around Christmas time. If he was meeting you in person right now, he would give you a big, doggy hug! Clark is a 53-pound bundle of snuggles who loves to play with toys. He is a two year-old Shar Pei-Pit Bull mix…Shar Pei because of his giant, wrinkly head.
Clark has a calm demeanor and a very smart guy, but can get excited when he is playing with toys and other dogs. He starts his training classes with the Texas DogFather the last week of September to help curb his overstimulation. Clark hasn’t been exposed to cats, so it is unknown if he likes or dislikes them. Clark knows general commands (along with high-five and hugs), is crate trained, housebroken, good with kids, and heartworm negative. He has some battle scars from his life on the streets, but that hasn’t taken away from his sweet nature or willingness to trust.
Clark enjoys long walks, sunbathing in the backyard, watching his foster mom cook in the kitchen, going for car rides, taking naps, and chewing on bones from the feed store. His dislikes are being in a crate (even though he is trained), sharing food, and green beans. Who is ready to welcome this handsome man into their family?
