Lucy is a 2 year old female poodle mix-- although she reminds us more of a fluffy white dachshund, she has a long skinny body and short little legs. She is one of the sweetest little girls ever. She was found as a stray in pretty rough shape with lots of mats in her fur and in heat. Luckily, she is heartworm negative and will be spayed soon. Lucy is just a happy and content, easy going gal. She's so thankful she was saved from the streets right before Houston got its first snow in 8 years!!
Hopper is a 35lb male schnauzer mix. He's a bitter larger then a miniature schnauzer and a big goofball of energy. He gets along great with other dogs, kids and all humans! He was found shortly after Hurricane Harvey looking pretty rough, but look how cute he is now!! He is crate trained and house broken. He's up to date on vaccinations, neutered and microchipped so he is all ready for his forever home! He is looking for a home or person that is active and can help him release his energy!
Butterfly is a spunky and loyal little Westie/Maltese mix with a heart of gold. She is estimated to be 5-6 years old and about 16 lbs. Butterfly was found as a stray who the vet believes had multiple litters in her life. She is excellent with dogs (big and small), and children older and younger. She is spunky and loves to play! She would love to have a family who will take her on walks and play chase with her outside. She picks up cues and house manners quickly as well. Butterfly is all around a perfect pup for a family who wants a low-shed dog who is great with other pets and kids.
Meet Sprout!! We suspect she's part black mouth cur, part lab, and all heart! This sweet pup was found sitting in the middle of the street looking for her family. She loves playing with kids and other dogs, and climbing into laps for cuddles. Her special talents include having feet that run too fast for the rest of her body, a pitiful squeak to let you know she wants to be cuddled, and an uncanny ability to hunt leaves and rocks. At only 12 weeks old, Sprout is the perfect age to transition seamlessly into a new family!
Turnip is a pretty, petite, lab girl. Turnip was turned in to a shelter in Lufkin, TX. They noticed she wasn't putting much weight on her back leg from an old injury, was pretty emaciated, and quickly hit the dreaded "list". AJL sprung her from the shelter and she is enjoying being in a foster home. She will be seeing a specialist to get her leg checked out and determine course of action which likely will include surgery followed by some crate rest. She's worth it though! She's very sweet and has been through a lot so we'd love to see this pretty lady land in a wonderful home.
Harlow is a 10 month old brindle pittie girl. She is coming from a life outside where she was tied up on a short chain. The only kindness she really knew was from the family next door, and now that family is fostering her!! She adores other people and does fantastic with other dogs. She would love an active home with another dog she can play with.
Bailey is an absolutely adorable flat coated retriever mix. She's young, approx 3-4 months old and a very playful pup!
In Arabic, Aamina means "safe" and that's exactly what this girl is now.
Her rescue took 4 days by the side of a 4 lane highway. We think she is 2-3 years old and some sort of terrier mix because she has a long body with short legs and is petite at only 21 lbs. She is still cautious about new people, dogs and places but she warms up quickly to show her happy, playful self. She loves chew toys, Kongs, walks, cuddles and belly rubs and is a quick learner. Aamina is house trained and gets along with cats and an elderly dog in her foster home. She loves being around her human and animal companions and would love to meet you! She'll need someone who can give her lots of love and patience.
This is Monkey. He's a tiny and fun Yorkie mix with lots of love to give! He loves everyone-- big dogs, small dogs, small kid humans and big tall humans, and even kitty friends!
He's young with lots of energy to burn so he is ready to play play play!!
Sparkle is a 2 year old chi-weenie. This gal is looking for a new home after her previous owners home flooded during Hurricane Harvey. Shes got big ears and a big heart! She is already spayed and current on vaccinations. Sparkle plays well with little kids and other dogs (even big ones!). She's housebroken and crate trained.
Ben (aka Benny Boy) is a little chi guy that was found at the intersection in SW Houston. He's doing great in a foster home with 3 big dogs and adjusting well.
Ben is heartworm positive, but AJL will cover all expenses related to treatment so please don't let this deter you from making this little guy a part of your home!
Goldie - or Munchkin as she's lovingly called - is a 5 month old Basenji/Cattle dog mix puppy. We actually have no idea what breed she is, but it's the closest explanation for the curly tail! Ha! She was found abandoned with her 3 siblings living under a house at 5 weeks old. But she's a fighter through & through!
You see, her siblings all left for homes in PA but she had to stay behind. Goldie has a condition called Congenital Lymphedema, predominantly in one of her hind legs. It's very rare, the Specialist who saw her said he's been practicing for 24 years and has only seen 2-3 cases. After several consults, the vet feels confident that she's currently a happy, healthy, playful puppy and we life expectancy is 2-3 years.
We'd love for her to find a home where she can find that love & compassion for the 2-3 years she's got. She lives in a foster home today with other dogs and holds her own! She sleeps in her crate through the night and is house trained. If you think you're the person or family for Goldie, please let us know! We can also discuss more regarding Congenital Lymphedema and AJL's commitment to help with medical bills.
HoneyBear had been living on the streets for a long time so she was weary of humans and a bit skittish. A skilled trapper was able to trap her and get her into a foster home where she is starting to come out of her shell. She is a chi-weenie mix, we guess maybe 6-8 years old. She has probably been a mom to a few litters in her days (those days are numbered now!) She was a bit reserved at first but is warming up to humans and other dogs and cats. She is in a home with other big dogs and some rambunctious puppies and is even starting to play with them, though she'll let them know when she is no longer interested. She is potty trained and does okay on leash walks. She's very sweet and loves belly rubs but isn't quite sure about being a lap dog just yet -- but she wants to be near you! HoneyBear needs a home that will be patient with her as she continues to come out of her shell and give her some basic training.
Update: Over the Thanksgiving holiday, Otis had some intestinal blockage. We got him to the Emergency vet to do Xrays and perform surgery to try to save him, but the Dr's were going to have to remove too much of his intestine that we made the sad decision to let Otis go. We are so incredibly thankful for his loving foster family who let Otis know what true love and care was!
Hello new friends, my name is Luna and let me tell you a little bit about myself...
I found myself turned into the city pound by my owners who called me Momma Dog. I was Momma Dog because I had many, many litters for them and that's all they knew me as. My teets were still heavy from the last litter. I sat at the shelter and wondered how I landed there while my babies were probably being sold for cash. Click to read more.... it's worth the read!!
Joey and Chandler (think FRIENDS!) are a senior bonded pair. They were surrendered to the shelter as brothers. When we saw how pathetic they looked online, we just couldn't let them stay there 1 more day-- so as an approved rescue, AJL was able to pull them. After some TLC from a wonderful foster family, they are doing much better and ready for adoption!
Joey is approximately 10 years old, and a white yorkie mix weighing in at 8lbs! Joey doesn't have full sight, he can see shadows & light, but that doesn't stop him! He is very loving, even though he has been through so much and has been a little trooper every step of the way. He loves to be held, and just craves human attention.
Chandler is a teacup or mini poodle, weighs around 7lbs, and we believe he's about 7-8 years old. In spite of the fact that he is blind and has had to overcome many obstacles, he just wants to be held and loved. In fact, he'd let you hold him all day long if he had his way. Chandler is house trained. We would prefer he be adopted with Joey, as they are a very bonded pair.
"I'll be there for you.... cause you're there for me too...."
Update: THEA BEAT CANCER AND HEARTWORMS!!!
Thea is a beautiful, gentle, and snuggly pittie mix with a pout that is hard to resist. She does great with small and large dogs, cats, and children-- she has lived with them all!
Thea was found on a nearby church property. When she was initially spotted, she was very pregnant. When someone came back to check on her, it was clear she had given birth, but it didn't seem like any of the puppies made it. She was covered in scabs and her skin was crawling with fleas. Without a place for her to go, eventually she was picked up by the city and taken to the shelter. With Houston shelter's so overcrowded, she quickly hit the "Euthanize" list. Luckily, a hero stepped up to foster her and let her know what love and care is all about!
Thea is heartworm positive and was recently diagnosed with cancer. She is undergoing chemo treatment and the Vet says there is a 95% success rate. Sweet Thea has been such a champ through all of this and everyone at the vets office comments on how sweet, calm and gentle she is. So, never judge a book by its cover because you may just miss an amazing story! She may look a little grumpy and serious in her photos, but she is full of soooo much love, just waiting to give it to whoever her forever family could be! Please consider giving this loving soul a chance!
Hello, my name is Pollo. Silly name but I'm actually a handsome 1-2 year old, 50 lb Terrier/American Pit Bull mix. I was roaming the streets all alone at night in January. Fortunately, I found a foster family that is taking great care of me. In the few short weeks I've been with my foster family, I've learned commands like: sit, stay, laydown, and kennel and I'm fully house trained. I love to cuddle, but I'm also full of energy and athletic. I get nervous on introductions because they are kinda new to me but I warm up after "breaking the ice".
I'm up to date on vaccinations and will be getting neutered soon, whatever that means....
I'm looking for a family that will help me grow-up to my potential and love me very much!
Ladies & Gents, welcome Johnny Cash to the crew! He's a handsome shepherd/lab mix who was dumped at our local vet office. Johnny was left with his sister, June Carter and they were both battling parvo.
The vet staff took special care of Johnny & June and helped them overcome the nasty parvo virus! Johnny is a playful pup and would love to have his very own family. He is estimated to be 1 year and 8 months old, he is up to date on all vetting and is neutered. Johnny would make a great jogging, frisbee, dog park, or dog bar buddy! Johnny and June can be adopted together or go to individual homes, the choice is yours!
